What is
PRO Skijor?
Part rodeo, part ski race, all-out adrenaline. If you've never seen it before, get ready — because once you do, you'll never forget it.
What is
Skijoring?
Skijoring is one of the oldest and most thrilling winter sports on the planet. At its core, it's simple — a horse pulls a skier through a course at full speed. What happens in between is anything but simple.
The word comes from the Norwegian skikjøring — meaning "ski driving." Originally a mode of winter transport in Scandinavia, it evolved into a competitive sport that spread across the American West where it found its natural home alongside rodeo culture and mountain living.
A typical course features gates, jumps, and ring grabs — all while the horse is running at full gallop and the skier is fighting to stay upright, hit every gate, and stick the landing. The fastest combined time wins. Simple in theory. Absolutely electric in person.
Horse + Rider + Skier
Three athletes. One rope. One shot at the fastest time. Every team is a unique combination of horsepower, skill, and trust.
Full Speed Racing
Horses run at a full gallop — pulling the skier through gates, over jumps, and past ring grabs at speeds that leave crowds breathless.
Fastest Time Wins
One run per day, two days of racing. The fastest combined time takes the buckle — and every second counts.
Western Roots
Born in Scandinavia, perfected in the American West. Skijoring found its spiritual home where cowboys meet ski towns — and PRO Skijor is its ultimate expression.
The Divisions
PRO Skijor offers divisions for every level — from elite competitors chasing the season standings to first-timers just here for the thrill of it. There's a place on the course for everyone.
PRO Division
The top tier — the fastest horses, most experienced riders, and most skilled skiers battling for the championship title.
Sport Division
Highly competitive and open to a wider range of experience levels. A natural stepping stone toward PRO.
Women's Division
Celebrating female athletes in the sport — riders, skiers, and teams competing at a high level with their own standings.
Snowboard Division
Same horse, same speed, same course — but on a snowboard. A crowd favorite that brings a whole new energy to race day.
All-Around — Switch-a-Roo
Rider and skier swap roles mid-competition. It takes a team with both disciplines mastered — and adds a unique twist to the race.
Novice Division
A great entry point for teams new to the sport — competitive but welcoming for those just getting started.
Century Division
The combined age of the rider and skier must equal 100 or more. Experience, wisdom, and a whole lot of fun.
Teen Division
For young competitors ready to take on the course — the next generation of PRO Skijor athletes in the making.
Ponies Only
All the speed and spirit of skijoring — with ponies leading the charge. A fan favorite at every stop.
Lil' Buckaroo
The youngest competitors on the course — big heart, big smiles, and the crowd's favorite division of the day.
Tour Points divisions earn season standings and qualify for the Championship Finals. Local Event divisions are available at most stops for competitors who want to race without chasing the full season — no season membership required.

The Experience
Coming to a PRO Skijor event isn't just watching a race. It's an entire day — sometimes an entire weekend — of energy, fashion, music, food, and community that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
The racing itself is jaw-dropping. Horses thunder down the course at full gallop while skiers carve through gates, launch off jumps, and grab rings — all connected by a single rope. The crowd is loud. The snow flies. The atmosphere is electric.
But what makes PRO Skijor truly special is everything that surrounds the race. Western fashion meets ski-town culture. Live music fills the venue between runs. Vendors line the course. Après-ski energy starts early and doesn't stop until the last buckle is handed out.
Whether you're there to compete, to cheer on a team, or just to soak it all in — PRO Skijor is a day you'll talk about long after the snow melts.

A Decade in
the Making
It started with a simple idea — what if you combined the horsepower of the rodeo with the speed of alpine skiing? In Heber City, Utah, where ranching valleys meet ski resorts, the answer was obvious. SkiJoring Utah was born.
What began as a local winter celebration quickly became something much bigger. Competitors drove hours to race. Fans packed the course. The energy was unlike anything the western sports world had seen.
Over the next decade, that local event grew into PRO Skijor — a national tour that spans multiple western states, airs on national television, and draws competitors and fans from across the country.
The sport has found its home. And it's just getting started.
Now You
Know.
The sport is real. The racing is fast. The experience is unforgettable. All that's left is to show up — as a fan, a competitor, or a partner.
